Brief Description
An error is when we accidentally get further away from our goal or what we want to happen.
How to Talk About This Term with Young Children
You might talk about errors in the context of sequences. For example, during a maze game, a child might sequence a set of arrows with an error in the sequence. You can support the child in understanding and noticing the error by moving through the maze following the arrows and NOT get to the goal. When you get to the error, you might say “Hmm, we’re moving further away from the end. Is that right?” If children successfully fix the error you might say, “You found the error and fixed it! You debugged the sequence and now we made it to the end.”
