Color is what you see when light shines off an object.

How to Talk About This Term with Young Children

For Light: An object appears as a certain color to us because that is the color of the light reflected off the object. This is a complicated topic, but you might talk about colors more broadly in regards to light: “Light helps us see all the colors around us, like the brown of the dirt, or your red of your hair.”

For Living Things: Talk with children about the colors of living things in relation to their needs. An animal’s color might help it hide or camouflage. A plant’s color might act as a warning to animals not to eat it.

For Structure and Properties: Encourage children to notice attributes of objects in the living and nonliving world such as color.
