What If Everyday Routines Were STEM Moments? A New Podcast Series

Posted on March 3, 2026 in Insights

Want to learn simple ways to embed STEM learning with your child into everyday routines and activities? The STEMIE Family Hotline podcast series is designed for busy families and can be listened to on the go. Each short episode offers practical ideas to help you turn everyday moments into meaningful STEM learning opportunities.

As a parent of a toddler, I’m constantly on the go and so being able to access parenting information while I’m driving to child care or while doing chores is important to me. While print/reading materials have been how information is usually shared, the evolution of technology has helped make information more available in multiple formats, ensuring families can have more flexibility in accessing information.

The STEMIE Family Hotline podcast series provides a convenient and accessible way for families to (a) Recognize STEM learning opportunities in everyday routines; (b) Build confidence in supporting young children’s learning; and (c) Feel empowered to approach daily activities with curiosity, creativity, and play.

The podcast includes a total of eight episodes. Each short episode follows the Diaz family and their 9-month-old child, Leia as they receive real-time support from STEM experts. Through everyday experiences, such as grocery shopping or going for an outdoor walk, the episodes show how simple moments can become meaningful STEM learning opportunities. In addition to following the Diaz family’s story, each episode also features a guest expert who shares strategies and insights for making everyday moments more inclusive and supportive of all children’s STEM learning.

Listeners can also access practical resources to reference and use alongside the podcast content. These resources are designed not only for families, but also for child care providers and early intervention providers to share with families.

You can listen to the STEMIE Family Hotline podcast series on Spotify and Apple Podcasts, or stream the episodes directly on our website (https://stemie.fpg.unc.edu/blogs/).
