Atomic Hands

Atomic Hands was started by Dr. Alicia Wooten and Dr. Barbara Spiecker, who are both scientists and part of the deaf community. They met while studying at Rochester Institute of Technology and realized they faced similar challenges with English-based learning and accessing science content. After a conference in 2017, they decided to create Atomic Hands to make a difference. They chose the name “Atomic Hands” to blend “atom” (representing the building blocks of life) with “hands” (reflecting their deaf community). Atomic Hands aims to spark interest in STEM by creating ASL-focused resources, encourage creative language use, and build connections among deaf STEM professionals.Atomic Hands is a presenter for STEMIEFest and has featured some of their resources.
