What does STEM have to do with me?

Authors: Early Intervention (EI) Providers

Publication Date:  July 1, 2025

This 60-minute webinar introduces early intervention (EI) professionals to the value of integrating STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) into their daily practice with young children and families. Participants will explore how natural, play-based STEM experiences support core IFSP outcomes across developmental domains—language, motor, social, and cognition—while reinforcing family-centered and culturally responsive practices. Attendees will reflect on their current work, recognize everyday opportunities to foster curiosity and problem-solving, and learn how STEM aligns with EI roles to strengthen children’s development. The session includes video examples, evidence-based frameworks, interactive reflection, and practical tools, with a focus on narrowing early opportunity gaps and empowering families to support their child’s development through everyday STEM learning. Participants will leave equipped with concrete ideas, free resources from the STEMIE Center, and action steps to enrich their EI sessions with STEM-rich learning opportunities.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify three ways in which STEM learning experiences naturally align with early intervention goals across developmental domains, including language, motor, cognitive, and social-emotional development.
  2. Describe three benefits to children and families that arise when EI providers identify and support STEM learning opportunities within early intervention settings.
  3. Identify three resources to support STEM teaching and learning practices within early intervention settings.
