Something that is large in size.

How to Talk About This Term with Young Children

For Forces and Motion: When noticing the ways objects move differently, children might attend to size or use size as an explanation for why they think something moves differently. Encourage and support all of children’s ideas and thinking. Remind children that heavier things need more force to move and lighter things need less force, but not all big things are heavy, so not all big things need a lot of force to move.

For Structure and Properties: Talk about how something is big in comparison to something else that is small and why that might be. “Hmm, the bed of this truck is very big. It’s made for holding a lot of materials. This cup is small, it’s made for holding just a little bit of water.”
