A Child-Centered Approach to Fostering Inclusive STEM Experiences
Wednesday, November 19th |8:30 AM – 10:30 AM
Presenters: Chih-Ing Lim, Megan Vinh, Douglas Clements, & Julie Sarama
Young children are natural born scientists, mathematicians, and engineers, yet children with disabilities are often denied science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) learning opportunities. The learning trajectories approach centers children in engaging playful experiences that build on their interests, needs, and critical thinking. In this session, we will explore case studies and view videos of children engaging in playful STEM experiences within everyday routines across early childhood environments. We will also use learning trajectories to intentionally plan STEM learning experiences that can support each child to reach their individualized goals and, simultaneously, their progressive development of STEM learning.
Supporting Instructors to Embed Inclusive STEM Content in Higher Education
Friday, November 21st | 3:00 PM – 4:30 PM
Presenters: Megan Vinh, Jessica Amsbary, & Chih-Ing Lim
There is a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) opportunity gap for children with disabilities and for those from historically marginalized backgrounds. This session will provide information about the STEM opportunity gap for children with disabilities and from historically underserved communities and share resources and strategies centered around inclusion and equity to empower our early educators to embed STEM learning opportunities for all children and families. By supporting faculty and professional development providers to integrate STEM content into their courses and sessions, this session will help increase the capacity of early educators in promoting joyful and developmentally appropriate STEM learning for children with disabilities and those from historically underserved communities.
