STEMIEFest 2021-Keynote

STEMIEFest Innovation for Inclusion in Early Education

Opening remarks by Dr. David Cantrell, Acting Director, Office of Special Education Programs, US Department of Education. Young children have a surprising capacity to think and learn STEM. The most developmentally appropriate, effective, and joyous approach is to support children’s natural ways of thinking. See videos of children thinking about STEM phenomena and discuss how to use such observations and insights to plan environments, routines, and intentional activities that support children's development of STEM concepts and processes.

Presenters: David Cantrell, Doug Clements, & Julie Sarama

In this keynote session, you will learn from Drs. Clements and Sarama about the learning trajectories approach in math and how it incorporates children’s thinking around a specific topic/goal, sequence of skills that lead to a specific goal, and teaching strategies to support children along a learning progression. The session focuses on meeting children where they are (what they are thinking) and supporting them to grow in science, technology, engineering, and math learning.
